Forklift steering involves controlling the movement of the vehicle and, in addition, the mast and forks, which are responsible for lifting and lowering loads. Steering is analogous to driving a car. A steering wheel is used, as well as brake and accelerator pedals. Some models are additionally equipped with a clutch. Most vehicles have two gears - a slow one and a faster one - and can move forwards and backwards.

Forklifts are also manoeuvrable and have a small turning radius, which makes them very easy to operate between shelves and in other narrow spaces. The manoeuvres are also precise, but due to their weight, the vehicles must be steered carefully at the same time, as they are more likely to tip over when loaded to their maximum capacity. Manoeuvres at high speed and full load are prohibited. Proper steering is taught by forklift operator course, which familiarises participants with the correct regulations for operating the equipment.
