High reach forklift trucks - operator 

The ERGON training centre offers training for operators of UDT equipment. Forklift trucks are under technical supervision, which means that operators and maintainers must be authorised to work with this equipment. Depending on the work to be carried out and the loads to be transported, different types of forklift trucks are used.

Training programme  

During the course you will learn about, among other things: 

  • the design and function of the forklift truck, 
  • the correct operation of the machine, 
  • the health and safety rules to be observed, 
  • trolley operation, 
  • technical supervision regulations, 
  • operator and maintenance duties. 

What types of forklifts are there? 

We can distinguish between two main groups of trolleys, which are divided according to the drive used in them or their functions. 

The group divided by drive includes: 

  • electric forklift trucks - are powered by a battery, their use is found in areas where, due to emissions, it is necessary to use an electric forklift; 
  • internal combustion forklift trucks - are powered by petrol, LPG, diesel. They are characterised by the fact that they emit fumes and their use should take place in open spaces. It is, of course, possible to use them in warehouses or other enclosed spaces, provided they have a special filter. 

The group divided by function includes:

  • off-road forklift trucks - we use them in areas where the ground is uneven; 
  • forklift trucks with variable reach - Also known as telehandlers. They have a distinctive long boom, which allows them to have a long reach for the work they perform; 
  • side loaders - Commonly referred to as side-loading trucks. Their design distinguishes them from others in that the operator of this machine is seated sideways to the direction of travel; 
  • reach trucks controlled from the horizontal or side platform - They are characterised by the fact that the operator performs his work by walking alongside the trolley or working on the platform; 
  • forklift trucks with extendable mast - are characterised by the fact that, instead of classic forks, they have a retractable mast with which they can carry loads such as pallets. 

Requirements for trainees

The following requirements must be met in order to start training: 

  • at least 18 years of age, 
  • have no contraindications from a doctor, 
  • have at least an elementary school education. 

If you meet these requirements you can confidently start a forklift course. Training is provided by highly qualified staff who will help you gain the necessary knowledge and skills to work with forklifts. 

Where are forklifts used? 

Lift trucks are commonly referred to as forklifts. They are used in warehouses, logistics centres, building depots and ports. They are usually used to transport pallets and crates, so the driver is required to be able to drive this equipment and handle the load skilfully. 

How do you get the powers you need?

The first thing we need to do is to enrol in a course that prepares us with theoretical as well as practical knowledge for the state exam. If we complete the course, then we have to take the UDT exam. This consists of a written test, and after we have passed this, it will be time for a test demonstrating our skills in working with the forklift truck. During the practical exam, we will have to perform a task assigned by the UDT commission to confirm our skills regarding the operation of this equipment. Then, after passing both of these tests, we will receive our forklift licence. The qualification is valid for a period of 5 or 10 years, depending on the type of equipment for which the qualification was made, i.e. those working with a specialised lift truck will have a valid qualification for a period of 5 years. The period extends to 10 years when it comes to lift trucks, excluding specialised and guided lift trucks, as well as those remotely controlled.
